WARREN- Got a suggestion about combating neighborhood crime trends? Want localized information from the Warren Police Department? City official said the NeighborNet program offers a place to share those details on the Web. According to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, the NeighborNet service could augment the city's recently revitalized Neighborhood Watch programs by helping member of homeowners associations, civic groups, and individuals stay abreast of issues relevant to public safety in the community. Amber Alerts, power outages and road closures are examples of the types of information that can be provided in real time to subscribers, Dwyer said. "That information goes out if you're registered," Dwyer said. "It's very easy to register. It's certainly something that's designed to assist us as far as our Neighborhood Watch programs that have been re-implemented by the mayor and brought back. (NeighborNet) is a great program, and it's a program that's provided at no cost." Ongoing areas of interest, including crime trends and tips for combating theft, can also be shared. The company behind the website, NeighborNet Inc., offers users a free community Web page with customizable content, including Neighborhood Watch information specific to the city's registered subdivisions. Dwyer said the city's Neighborhood Watch block captains could use the service to provide instant communication between the Warren Police Department and registered residents of the neighborhood about non-emergency information. Dwyer said plans to promote the service as a means of sharing Neighborhood Watch information were still in an early phase, and it was unclear how many residents of Warren's neighborhoods had or would use the service. Rosemarie Gattari said she's been involved with the Neighborhood Watch program since the late 1980s, and at one point, about 95 percent of those in her neighborhood participated. She said the NeighborNet would be a welcome complement to her effort to revitalize Neighborhood Watch near her home off of 11 Mile Road, between Hoover and Schoenherr. Gattari said sharing information, like encouraging neighbors to leave their porch lights on at night, is an important part of keeping the streets safe. "I believe when the neighbors can keep an eye on the neighborhood, it's less work for the police," Gattari said. "I feel very strongly that it (Neighborhood Watch) reduces crime and helps us to feel safe in our neighborhoods." Residents can search for their neighborhood and register for the service at www.nnliving.com.

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (WXYZ) - Frightened by crime she saw going on in her neighborhood, a determined wife and mother decided to do something about it.

Roseanna Ondra became frustrated after seeing and hearing about several crimes on her street and in her neighborhood, so she decided to do something about it. Roseanna and her husband Aaron started up a neighborhood watch. They did such a good job with the program that they were asked if they wanted to try a new on-line program which helps "watchers."

A company called NeighborNet showed them how to use their software so they could communicate online about things going on in their neighborhood. By using a website, the "watch" has grown in numbers and continues to increase in size every month. Residents are able to login and blog about suspicious activity in their neighborhood and contact the police if needed.

In addition to using the web, people will soon be able to monitor activity from their streets on the web. Thanks to the Guardian Alarm company, four video cameras will be installed on four undisclosed properties. Guardian will donate three of them, while the neighborhood has raised money for the fourth camera. Roseanne just wants people to realize that if something negative is going on in their neighborhood, they can do something about it.
